Conduit Fittings FAQ: What $14,000 in Rework Taught Me

I've been handling electrical conduit fitting orders at GridSense for eight years. I've personally made six significant mistakes there, totaling roughly $14,000 in wasted budget โ€” mostly rework, a few total write-offs. Now I keep our team's 27-point pre-order checklist. These are the questions I get asked most, and why they matter more than I'd like to admit.

What's the actual difference between corrugated and rigid conduit fittings?

Corrugated is the flexible, ribbed stuff โ€” used for vibration, tight bends, or short runs where rigid won't reach. Rigid (RMC, IMC, EMT) is the fixed backbone of a proper installation. The fittings are not interchangeable, and that's the mistake I want you to skip.

In my first year (2017), I shipped 40 corrugated connectors to a job that specified rigid. The client rejected the crate at the dock. $640 straight to the scrap bin. Lesson: don't read "20mm" on a drawing and assume it tells you the conduit family. It doesn't. Look at the installation type, then match the fitting to the conduit, not the reverse.

Why doesn't "standard 20mm" match between vendors?

Because 20mm is nominal. IEC 61386 and the US trade-size convention don't agree on what "20mm" means in practice โ€” an IEC 20mm fitting won't necessarily seat on a US 3/4" trade-size conduit, and vice versa. Wall thickness, thread pitch, and outside diameter are all separate variables.

In March 2019, I ordered 500 fittings listed as "20mm." On arrival, they were 0.6mm loose on a 22mm OD conduit. The vendor wasn't lying โ€” they were quoting IEC. I just never confirmed the standard.

Now I ask for a dimensional drawing with tolerances before any PO over 100 units. That's it. It's cost us nothing since.

Do nylon locking conduit clamps survive rooftop UV?

Depends entirely on which nylon. Carbon-black stabilized PA6/PA66 handles UV. Unfilled or cheap imported grades go brittle within a year on a sun-facing roof. And "outdoor rated" on a spec sheet means nothing without a UV stabilization standard behind it.

In 2021, I ordered 3,000 nylon locking conduit clamps for a rooftop project. I picked the cheap ones. Fourteen months later, roughly 22% had cracked. We replaced them all โ€” parts plus labor came to about $2,400, and the client couldn't schedule the swap without shutting down a rooftop HVAC zone for a day.

If the clamps will see direct sun for more than a few hours a day, ask the supplier which nylon grade and which UV rating. If they hesitate, that's your answer.

Are locknuts on metal conduit connectors really required?

Yes. NEC 300.10 requires electrical continuity for metal raceways, and every UL-listed metal conduit connector I've seen is listed with its locknut for a reason. Skip it and you're relying on friction and luck.

Early on, I let a contractor talk me into "the threads are tight enough, we don't need the locknuts." It passed his install. It failed the fire inspection two weeks later. That meant pulling the conduit apart, re-threading, and re-terminating a whole rack โ€” three days of delay plus a $1,100 re-inspection line item. The locknuts were $0.40 each.

5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. That's the whole philosophy behind the checklist now.

When should you not use flexible corrugated conduit?

Here's the counterintuitive one. Everyone reaches for flex corrugated because it's fast to install. But it isn't sealed by default, and it isn't rated for wet, washdown, or buried applications unless it carries a specific listing for those.

September 2022: I supplied flexible corrugated conduit into a food-processing washdown zone. Six weeks in, three of the fittings had oxidation on the couplings. We ended up swapping the whole run to a liquid-tight listed setup. Double the original cost, plus a production-line shutdown.

Rule now: if there's standing water, spray, or soil, flex corrugated needs a listed liquid-tight or direct-burial rating โ€” otherwise it's rigid or armored cable, period.

Black split wire loom โ€” indoor only, or outdoor too?

Black split wire loom is a harness management product, not a protective raceway. It's brilliant indoors: quick to add wires to, keeps bundles tidy, cleans up the inside of a panel. But it is not UV-stable, not waterproof, and it will not survive a summer on an exterior wall.

I've had to explain this on probably a dozen quotes now, because a certain marketplace listing implies otherwise. Save yourself the call: indoor and protected only, unless the supplier can name the UV-stabilized grade and show a test reference for it.

What's the single cheapest check before ordering?

Sample fit. Not the spec sheet. Not the vendor's dimension table. Physically thread the metal conduit connector onto a scrap of the actual conduit you plan to use. Snap the nylon locking conduit clamp over a piece of the actual wire bundle. Seat the corrugated fitting onto an offcut of the electrical corrugated conduit it's supposed to marry.

Two sample-fit sessions in Q1 2024 caught three mismatches before they became production orders. Against our current checklist, that's roughly $8,000 of rework that never happened.

Five minutes at a bench. Hands on the parts. That's the whole trick.
