If you're responsible for buying or maintaining a commercial generator, you've probably seen a quote that looked low — then grew after shipping, commissioning, and the first service call. This checklist is for procurement people and facility managers who want to compare Caterpillar generator options on total cost, not just the sticker price. A generator is only useful if you can maintain it. Ask the dealer to list the first-year and second-year parts you'll need: oil filter, air filter, fuel filters, separator, AVR, sensors, belts, and inline electric fuel pump. For a Caterpillar C32 generator, maintenance parts are generally available through the dealer network, but “generally” isn't a plan. Check lead times and stock availability at the service location near your site. As of March 2025, this matters more than ever for older packages.

I should add a warning here. Cross-referencing oil filters across engines can backfire. Step 7: Plan Commissioning and Operator Training
