Why I Started Specifying Mitsubishi PLCs Differently (and Why You Should Too)

If you're specifying a Mitsubishi PLC, stop looking at just the processor price. I learned this the hard way in 2023. After 5 years of managing industrial automation purchases for a mid-sized plant, I'd argue that the most important spec isn't on the datasheet—it's the quality of your distributor's technical support and their ability to deliver exactly what you need, when you need it.

The Mistake I Kept Making

Early on, I'd pull up a Mitsubishi PLC price list and go straight to the cheapest CPU module. I figured all our applications were fairly straightforward—a few digital inputs, some outputs, maybe a simple HMI. Why pay extra for a Q-series processor when an FX5U would do the job?

Turns out, that logic works great for a bench test. In production? It's a different story.

When the Numbers Didn't Add Up

In 2023, I needed to spec a replacement PLC for a fill-line machine. The Mitsubishi FX5U looked like the ideal candidate on paper—good price, compact size, modern architecture. My spreadsheet said it was the clear winner. My gut said something felt off. This one's easy to overlook. The cost of the Mitsubishi PLC programming software (GX Works2, GX Works3, iQ Works) is often a separate budget line item. Getting a license for a new series might not be in this year's plan. It's not just the CPU you're buying—it's the eco-system around it.

I always check if our existing software supports the target PLC. If it doesn't, that's a few hundred to a few thousand extra dollars for the license and a week of training for the team to get up to speed. That can blow the budget pretty quickly.

When I Still Choose the Cheaper Option

I'm not saying you should always go for the expensive one. Sometimes, the budget is the budget. For non-critical applications like a simple conveyor control or a lighting system, the Mitsubishi FX3U or FX5U is perfectly fine. The risks are manageable, and the cost savings are real.

The key is being honest with yourself about the consequences of failure. If a downtime event costs $1,000 per minute, paying an extra $500 for a more robust module or better support is a no-brainer. If it's a peripheral system that can wait a day for a replacement, the lower price wins.

There's something satisfying about getting a perfectly executed rush order through for a critical machine. After all the stress and coordination, seeing it delivered on time and correct—that's the payoff. But getting there requires the right choices upfront.

The Bottom Line from Someone Who's Been There

Look, I'm not an engineer. I'm a buyer. But after processing 60-80 orders annually for automation gear, I've learned that the Mitsubishi PLC ecosystem is deep. The right choice isn't just the cheapest CPU on the Mitsubishi price list. It's the one that comes with the right support, the right compatibility, and the right long-term cost picture.

As of January 2025, my advice is simple: start your spec with a conversation with a good distributor, not a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet will tell you the price. The distributor will tell you the real cost.
